About
Our History
Experience the SMART Difference

A Proud History

Local Union #1 has been part of Illinois’ building trades tradition since the earliest days of the organized sheet metal trade. In 1887, Robert Kellerstrass—Recording Secretary of the Tin and Cornice Makers’ Association of Peoria—helped promote unity among local organizations and the formation of a national union. At the union’s first convention in 1888, Kellerstrass was elected General Treasurer.

History of Local Union 1

Years later, as local numbers shifted, there was debate about Peoria’s right to the “#1” designation. Ultimately, in 1924, Kellerstrass drew the #1 designation out of a hat when the union’s name changed to the Sheet Metal Workers International Association—cementing Local 1’s place in union history.

In January 2008, the Sheet Metal Workers International Association merged with the United Transportation Union, forming the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers (SMART).

Local 1 proudly preserves this legacy—many historic items remain on display at our office, including early union banners, an 1888 journal, member badges, and original charters.
